What is Zince

What is Zinc

Zinc (atomic symbol Zn) is a highly important mineral that is needed by the body. Some consider it the most important mineral because it participates in a wide variety of enzyme functions (at least a 100) and the functioning of the immune system. Next to iron, it is generally the most abundant mineral in the body.

Benefits of Zinc

Zinc regulates our genetic activity by making sure our cells respond correctly to instructions that our body asks them to perform. It functions in our enzymes by regulating our blood-sugar levels, metabolism, energy use, and protein digestion.

It is also very important for the functioning of our immune system by fighting free radicals within the body (think "zinc lozenges"). Teenagers need it for sexual development. It also supports your sense of taste and smell.

Zinc toxicity can cause stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, a bitter taste, and diarrhea. Deficiency of zinc, unfortunately is common, and can cause weakening of the immune system, which can lead to infections, delayed development of children, issues with taste & smell, slow healing of wounds, depression, and prostate issues with men.

Zinc Foods

Although not always easy to consume, some foods that contain zinc are oysters, beef, liver, eggs, whole grains, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, shellfish, peas, crimini mushrooms, and spinach. It is suggested to consume 10-30 mg daily.
