What is the Body Mass Index
What is the Body Mass Index (bmi)
The definition of body mass index (bmi) is a rough calculation used to determine what your healthy body weight should be in relation to your height. It can be used to indicate your obesity levels, determining if you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
The body mass index calculation is not full proof because it doesn't take into account how much of your weight is muscle versus how much of your weight is fat. Muslce is more dense than fat. This can result in someone who is muscular and physically fit to have a high bmi giving the appearance that this person is overweight.
If you are muscular and fit do not get discourage if the bmi calculator below puts you in an overweight or even obese category.
In general, adults are considered obese, if their bmi is greater than 30. They are overweight if their bmi is 25-30 and they are underweight if their bmi is below 18.5. This means a normal weight range for bmi is between 18.5 and 25.
For a more accurate gage of your fitness level use the body fat percentage calculator to understand where your body fat is.
