What is Sodium

Sodium is an essential mineral for the body, however your body doesn't need much. Sodium chloride is table salt, which is the main dietary source of sodium for humans.

Benefits of Sodium

Sodium does quite a bit for the body. It helps regulate our blood pressure, regulates fluid balance with in our bodies, helps regulate muscle contraction, it helps with the transfer of nutrients, and helps make other minerals soluable within our blood.

Consuming too much Sodium

Many people consume far too much sodium. One of the biggest reasons why we consume too much, is that sodium is commonly used as a food preserve in many prepared and processed foods.

Too much consumption has been linked to heart disease, kidney disease, and high blood pressure. It’s best to seek professional advice on your sodium intake. Check the labels and ask questions about what you are buying to make sure you are not consuming too much sodium.

The American Heart Association suggest you should attempt to eat 1500 mg of sodium or less per day. The average American consumes over 3400 mg per day.

Look for foods that are "unsalted," "fresh," and "organic" items. Look to other spices as an alternative to salt and limit your intake of salted snacks like chips and nuts.

Table Salt to Sodium amounts

1/4 teaspoon salt = 575 mg sodium
1/2 teaspoon salt = 1,150 mg sodium
3/4 teaspoon salt = 1,725 mg sodium
1 teaspoon salt = 2,300 mg sodium
1 tablespoon salt = 6,900 mg sodium
