What is Silicon
What is Silicon
Silicon is commonly known for its role in electronics, but recently the health benefits have been studied on a closer level and have been found to be great for the human body. Silicon (atomic symbol Si) is sometimes referred to as silica. It is one of the most abundant minerals found in both the earth's soil and in food.
Benefits of Silicon
Silicon strengthens connective tissues, bones, cartilage, arteries, and reducing cardiovascular disease. It is also a "beauty mineral" because it helps with your hair, skin, and nails. It is commonly used to help heal fractures.
If you are deficient in silicon you may run into issues with your connective tissues and have poor nails, aging skin, and even hair loss. Toxicity issues are still being studied and nothing major has been found.
Silicon Foods
The best silicon foods are whole grains (wheat, oats, & rice), lettuce, cucumbers, onions, cabbage, carrots, fish, and almonds. It is suggested to consume anywhere from 100-1000 mg of silicon per day, however, there is no "official" recommendation.
