What is Selenium

What is Selenium

Selenium (atomic symbol Se) is a trace element that is found in different areas of the world and in different foods depending on the soil content. It is needed by the body; however, the body doesn't need much.

Benefits of Selenium

Selenium is a detoxification mineral, helping the body breakdown toxic chemicals. It also helps the body fight free radical damage, reducing oxidative stress (click Antioxidants for more info on oxidative stress). Reducing oxidative stress is also very important for cancer prevention. Selenium supports the function of the thyroid gland by helping to produce and regulate an important thyroid hormone.

Deficiency in selenium can cause cancers, cataracts, and heart & cardiovascular diseases. Toxicity with selenium could cause upset stomachs, nausea, vomiting, rashes, and hair loss.

Selenium Foods

Foods that contain selenium are liver, yeast, whole grains, snapper, cod, salmon, halibut, shrimp, eggs, sunflower seeds, and turkey. It is suggested to consume 50-200 mcg of selenium per day.
