What is Potassium
What is Potassium
Potassium (atomic symbol K) is mostly contained in the cells of your body and is vital to their functioning. Potassium is one of the 3 electrolyte minerals (sodium and chloride are the others). Fortunately, potassium is contained naturally in many foods.
Benefits of Potassium
Potassium has a host of benefits to the human body. It helps the muscles and nerves in your body to function properly. It does this by moving potassium in and out of cells through potassium channels our body sets up. These channels contribute to action potentials, signals your brains sends to your muscles, helping to regulate your muscle contraction.
Potassium is also important for maintaining the correct water and acid-base (pH) balance in your body, helping regulate your blood pressure, reducing cramps and soreness in your muscles, particularly after workouts.
Deficiency issues with potassium include fatigue, high blood pressure, muscle weakness, poor muscle contractions, heart problems, diarrhea, and vomiting. Too much potassium can result in kidney issues and heart problems.
Potassium Foods
Banana's are commonly known for containing potassium and is common in many other fruits and veggies, such as, avocados, spinach, cantaloupe, broccoli, parsley, Brussels sprouts, and tomatoes. It can also be found in potatoes, whole grains, lima beans, and tuna.
It is suggested for adults to consume 2-4 g of potassium per day.
