What is Manganese
Manganese (atomic symbol Mn), not to be confused with magnesium, is a trace mineral that contributes to a broad range of enzyme systems in the body. The body contains roughly 10-20 milligrams of manganese, which is found mainly in the kidneys and liver.
Benefits of Manganese
Manganese is essentially a catalyst activating many enzymes in the body used for cell metabolism, bone formation, and the utilizations of different nutrients (thiamin, vitamin C, biotin, choline). It helps the body use proteins & amino acids, as well as, synthesizes fatty acids and cholesterol. It is also known to help keep proper blood sugar levels in the body and help with thyroid functioning.
Manganese deficiency, although uncommon, may cause upset stomachs, vomiting, high blood sugar, poor bone structure, high cholesterol, and rashes. Toxicity with manganese is also uncommon, but may cause mood swings and hallucinations.
Manganese Foods
Great sources of manganese include pineapple, whole grains, oats, peas, beans, spinach, nuts, raspberries, strawberries, garlic, and cinnamon. It is suggested to take 2-5 mg per day.
