What is Chromium

What is Chromium

Chromium (atomic symbol Cr) is not a common mineral found in many foods. It is an essential mineral to the body, but it is found in small, trace amounts of food.

Benefits of Chromium

Chromium plays an important role for controlling blood-sugar levels by helping insulin assist in glucose (sugar) entering your cells. Because glucose gives you energy, chromium is also important for giving your body energy. It also could help in your cholesterol levels by working with your cholesterol metabolism.

If you are deficient in chromium, which is considered common, particularly in America, it may affect your body's response to insulin. This could lead to high blood-sugar levels, diabetes, or heart problems. There are no major toxicity issues with chromium.

Chromium Foods

Chromium is common in yeast, whole grains, onions, lettuce, tomotoes, oysters, beans, and potatoes. There is no official recommendation on chromium consumption, however, it is suggested to consume 25-100 mcg's of chromium per day. Because chromium is not often found in American diets, mainly due to food processing, which removes the chromium from foods, you may need to take supplements to meet these daily suggestions.
