Stress and Health

Stress and health are intertwined and to achieve great health you must have minimal stress. Please, do not underestimate how damaging the impacts of stress can be on your health.

Whether you have workplace stress, stress from your home life, your personal commitments, your finances, or some other aspect of your life, it can seem like the weight of the world is on your shoulders almost daily. That's no way to live and no way to be healthy.

When you experience stress it comes in 3 different stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion.

Alarm - This is the first response, where your body experiences a rush of adrenaline caused when it recognizes the stress. Adrenaline is a hormone produce by your body as a "fight or flight" response in reaction to a stressful situation.

Resistance - This is your body coping with the stress. You can cope with stress by changing the way you think, learning new skills to cope with the stress, and/or emotionally handling (releasing built-up emotions, meditating, using distractions) the stress.

Exhaustion - This can be the "danger zone" for stress response. This is when you can break down physically and emotionally because it becomes too difficult to continue fighting the stress. This may result in illness, disease, or depression.

The good news is even if you are unable to completely eliminate stress, you can take steps to dramatically reduce stress and the impact it has on your health. To do this you must:

  • Identify and understand the definition of stress.
  • The causes of stress and which ones are affecting you.
  • Learn stress management techniques to reduce your stress.
  • Implement the necessary changes to alleviate the stress.
  • Practice stress relief so when stress does reoccur you can minimize its effects immediately.
  • Stress and health go hand in hand. For more information on stress I encourage to to read further the links listed on this page.
