Gait Analysis

Gait analysis is one of the most important and often overlooked aspects of our health.

What is Gait?

It refers to the style of movement in our limbs, while we walk.

Why is gait important?

Everyone has their own unique gait. It's important to notice and check your gait because of the impact it has on our bones and joints.

The way we distribute our weight when we walk, particularly to our feet, ankles, and knees, can affect our mobility as we get older.

A steady stream of improper weight distribution on our feet, ankles, and knees over a lifetime will inevitably wear down our bones and joints causing a multitude of chronic pains. These pains may include corns, calluses, bursitis, inflammations, strains, tendonitis, arthritis, lower back pain, and plenty of other ailments.

Analyzing your Gait

For a simple gait analysis, it's best to check yourself in mirror and walk on an even surface. For a more comprehensive analysis of your gait, consult with a professional.

  • Step with your heel first, followed by the bottom of your foot, then the ball of your foot, and last the toes.
  • Push off with your toes and the ball of your foot to move your body forward.
  • Make sure your knees are pointed forward and your arms move in rhythm with your legs to balance your body.
  • Keep an eye on your hips, making sure they remain on an even plain, and there are no hitches in your step.
  • A couple of common causes of poor gait are bad posture and the wrong shoes. Be conscious of your posture as you walk. People have different feet. It's important to recognize your type of foot and which shoe will best fit it. For example, if you have significant arches in your feet, find a shoe that is made to fit these arches. Shoes affect the way you walk and run, be conscious of the shoes you wear.

If you experience constant discomfort when you walk it's best to consult a doctor or healthcare provider.
